Russell Hicks didn’t set out to run a moving company. He grew up on his family’s dairy farm off Peruville Road outside Etna, waking up before school to help with milking. His uncle hauled milk cans around the county and, on the side, helped neighbors move furniture between farmhouses, Russell rode along on plenty of those trips before he was old enough to drive.
After high school, Russell spent eleven years driving tank trucks for a regional dairy cooperative across Tompkins and Cortland counties. Then a run of bad milk prices forced the family to sell the herd in 2010. The farm was gone, but the truck license wasn’t going anywhere.
In 2011, Russell bought a used 24-foot box truck at auction and started Hicks Moving and Storage. The first jobs came from other farm families selling off land around Dryden; word spread, and soon the growing wave of Cornell-area renters in Ithaca started calling too.
Fifteen years later, the company Russell built has grown into a 14-person team with 8 movers on staff, but it still runs the way it started. Our own trucks, our own crew, and a founder who still climbs in the driver’s seat. Russell still drives the truck himself on bigger rural moves, and he personally walks every long-distance job before it’s quoted.
Karen Whitfield has run the scheduling board since 2016, and she’s usually the one who answers the phone when someone calls about a move around Ithaca or Cortland. After a decade of juggling crew schedules against Tompkins County weather and Cornell’s lease calendar, she has a good feel for which weeks fill up fast.
Aisha Green joined as lead estimator in 2019 and handles most of the in-home and video walkthroughs that turn into quotes. She’s developed a sharp sense for which rural driveways and Collegetown walk-ups near campus call for a smaller truck, a detail that saves customers money before the move even starts.
Nancy Pelletier has managed billing and insurance since 2020, including the certificates of insurance that Ithaca-area apartment buildings often require before move-in day. When a claim does need to be filed, she’s the one who walks customers through the paperwork.
Todd Bergeron has run the local Dryden and Ithaca crew since 2018. Years of Tompkins County moves have taught him exactly which rural roads turn to mud first after spring thaw: knowledge that keeps our trucks, and the schedule, out of trouble.
Wyatt Mackey leads the long-distance crew on runs to Syracuse, Rochester, and Albany. He joined Hicks Moving and Storage in 2021 after seven years driving CDL for a regional freight carrier, and he brings that same highway discipline to every long-haul move we book.
Every member of this professional moving team is a W-2 employee, not a contractor pulled in for the day. If you’d like to see what this crew can do, browse our full list of moving services or read what past customers have said on our reviews page.

Our Services
The one-bedroom off Collegetown gets the same movers and the same equipment as the farmhouse packing up for Rochester. We don't farm the small jobs out to a lesser crew. Whichever of the nine services you book, it stays ours the whole way, never resold to some truck down the road.
Our Range Of Services IncludesLocal Dryden Moves
Farmhouses off Peruville Road, student rentals near Cornell, ranch homes in Varna. Our crew has hauled through every kind of Tompkins County move, usually wrapped up before dark.
Learn More →Long-Distance Moves from Dryden
When a Cornell postdoc's contract ends and the next one starts in Rochester or Albany, the load doesn't get handed to a subcontractor at the county line, the crew that packs it drives it.
Learn More →Tompkins County Home Moves
Farmhouses outside Dryden and starter homes in Lansing both get worked the same way, one crew, one truck, and a price we settle on before anybody starts carrying boxes out the door.
Learn More →Ithaca-Area Apartment & Rental Moves
Narrow stairwells in the older Collegetown buildings and tight turnaround dates tied to the Ithaca lease cycle both call for a different plan than a house move, so we plan around both.
Learn More →Full-Service Packing for Tompkins County Homes
Give us the day and we'll pack the whole house (kitchen, root cellar, the barn full of boxes nobody's opened in years) with padded wrap and dish-pack cartons built for rural roads, not just a driveway.
Learn More →Short-Term Storage Between Leases
Leases in Ithaca rarely line up perfectly with a closing date, so when there's a gap, we hold your load in a heated space instead of a storage pod freezing shut in a Finger Lakes winter.
Learn More →Piano Moving Across Tompkins County
Uprights and baby grands out of old farmhouses and newer Ithaca builds alike. Our crew straps it, ramps it, and gets it down the stairs without marking the piano or the floor.
Learn More →Loading & Unloading Help in Dryden
Rented your own truck and don't want to blow a disc lifting a dresser alone? Two of our guys show up, load or unload it, and let you handle the driving.
Learn More →Senior & Downsizing Moves in Tompkins County
Downsizing out of a longtime Tompkins County farmhouse into somewhere smaller takes patience as much as muscle. We work at your pace and label everything by room.

Every job we run in Dryden moves through the same four stages, and not one of them ends in a moving-day surprise. Here is what each stage looks like up close.
Aisha Sizes Up The Job
She would rather see the place than guess at it, so a walkthrough, in your home or over video, is where the figure starts. A gravel driveway too tight for the big truck, a hayloft still stacked with boxes, an old upright wedged into a back bedroom: all of it lands in the quote before you commit to anything.
Nancy Squares Away The Paperwork
Before the truck ever leaves the yard she has handled the valuation coverage and any certificate of insurance an Ithaca building manager needs, with the flat price down in writing beside it. Nothing about the cost gets renegotiated once the ramp is down.
Todd Or Wyatt Takes The Crew Out
A run around Tompkins County goes out under Todd; anything crossing state lines rides with Wyatt. Whichever it is, every piece is padded before it leaves the room, and the crew reads a steep dirt driveway or a narrow Collegetown stairwell rather than muscling straight through it.
We Leave It Set Up, Not Stacked
You aren't left staring at a wall of boxes when we pull out. The used wrap and broken-down cardboard ride off on the truck, every carton has already been carried to whatever room its label calls for, and the beds are stood back up and ready to make. What's waiting for you is a house you can start living in.
The Reasons People Hire Us Twice
A Crew Chief Who Knows You By Name
There's no rotating cast of foremen here. Todd has the local crew, and after years on these back roads he can usually tell from the driveway alone whether the big truck fits or whether it's going to take a shuttle. Wyatt owns the long-distance runs. He put in seven years behind a CDL freight rig before this, so a day of interstate miles doesn't faze him. Either way, you know exactly who's running your move well before it starts.
A Lake-Effect Squall Won't Bump Your Date
Winter around here isn't something we scramble to react to. The squalls that blow off the Finger Lakes and the mud that swallows a farm lane every spring thaw are both penciled into the calendar long before your date comes up, so a rough forecast never costs you your slot. Salt and traction mats ride in every truck for an iced-over set of farmhouse steps, and when a storm pushes your closing back, we shift with it and keep the booking.
The Same Truck The Whole Way
There is no depot swap on a long-distance job with us, no second driver picking up where the first left off. Wyatt runs the whole lane himself: loading in Dryden, driving the miles, and carrying the last box inside at the destination, be it Syracuse a couple hours off or Albany at the end of a long day. Nobody but the crew that packed you ever lays a hand on your things.

Reviews From Our Customers
“Hired the full pack because of a two-week closing window and a bad back. Two movers showed up at eight and had the entire house boxed by mid-afternoon, root cellar included. I never touched a roll of tape.”
“Our new lease didn't start for three weeks after the old one ended, so Hicks held everything in a heated space instead of a storage pod that would've frozen shut out here by December.”
“That upright came from my grandmother's farmhouse and I was terrified moving it down a gravel driveway would wreck it, the crew ramped it into the truck without a single scuff.”
